Some sad news for Discworld fans

  • Dec. 12th, 2007 at 3:28 PM
Mana what?
Well, I'm kicking myself for not going to see Terry Pratchett at this year's Library of Congress Bookfest now. In a open letter to Discworld fans, Terry has announced that he has been diagnosed with a rare form of early onset Alzheimer's disease. Terry stresses that he's ok, getting good treatment and continuing to work.

Folks,

I would have liked to keep this one quiet for a little while, but because of upcoming conventions and of course the need to keep my publishers informed, it seems to me unfair to withhold the news. I have been diagnosed with a very rare form of early onset Alzheimer's, which lay behind this year's phantom "stroke".

We are taking it fairly philosophically down here and possibly with a mild optimism. For now work is continuing on the completion of Nation and the basic notes are already being laid down for Unseen Academicals. All other things being equal, I expect to meet most current and, as far as possible, future commitments but will discuss things with the various organisers. Frankly, I would prefer it if people kept things cheerful, because I think there's time for at least a few more books yet :o)

Terry Pratchett

PS I would just like to draw attention to everyone reading the above that this should be interpreted as 'I am not dead'. I will, of course, be dead at some future point, as will everybody else. For me, this maybe further off than you think - it's too soon to tell. I know it's a very human thing to say "Is there anything I can do", but in this case I would only entertain offers from very high-end experts in brain chemistry.

I had read that earlier today as well off of a Reddit feed. My hopes and lots of good joss going out to him. He is a very oddly wonderful type of chap, as I can tell by his books.

BTW, did you have the chance to catch 'Hogfather'? It's been on the ION channel a couple of times; if not holler out and I'll capture it on Tivo and burn it to DVD to you.

No, I haven't seen it yet. I was thinking about downloading the CD for the holidays off of Audible, but the Discworld books run from around $40 to $60 (which is considerably more than most other books). If you've got a copy I'd love to see it. Is it for sale on DVD here in the states? Hmm, I'll have to check it out on BBC America. Thanks for the offer! ^_^

Actually, I think they showed it on ION, Channel 49 or something on cable (whatever used to be PAX). I never saw it, but I heard some people mention that.

If worse comes to worse, and it isn't going to be replayed anytime soon, you could always bittorrent it as a Divx file. Let me know if you need a fix.

PS - It was fairly amusing to me.

The next showing of Hogfather according to DirecTV is Dec 23 at 1900. I'll set it up to record, if you like. I think I already have a Divx copy of it, but that's probably computer only unless you have a DVD player that has Divx codecs built in.
